September 2007: “UX ChitChat”

by on August 28, 2007

September 20, 2007
5:00 to 6:30 pm
Accelerator Centre
Meeting room #2
295 Hagey Blvd., Waterloo
UPDATE: Location confirmed, we’re at the Accelerator Centre as originally planned.

Join us on September 20 for ninety minutes of fascinating, illuminating, edge-of-your-seat… chitchat. Okay, perhaps we’re over-promising somewhat here, but with your help we could kick off the season with an energetic bang. Navid and Robert will discuss plans for upcoming events and facilitate conversations on whatever topics are of interest to the folks who attend. From the variety of people who participated last spring, we know there’ll be no shortage of things to talk about; so instead of listening to a speaker tackle a single topic in depth, you’ll get a chance to spark conversations and hear what others have to say. Wrestling with a problem and want some ideas? Read something interesting and like to share? Come on out for some quality ChitChat.

Give us a taste of what you’d like to ChitChat about!

With some advance notice, we can pull together some supporting materials. So if there’s a topic that interests you, simply add a comment to this blog posting. That lets others see what you’ve suggested and voice their support too. Here are some examples of topics, to get you thinking:

  • What’s up with people going crazy over Apple’s iPhone?
  • I’ve been hearing about Design Patterns. Anybody using them?
  • Tips for creating interactive prototypes
  • Connecting design objectives with business goals

Please toss your ideas into the comments for this post. Thanks! Hope to see you on the 20th!

  1. We’ll discuss some ideas for our October 2007 event.

I’ll be attending the Explore Design Conference (for youth) in October. I have been wrestling with the idea of how to make UX more appealing to those just entering the workforce, who don’t necassarily come from a design background i.e. thosewho dont have a degree in design, but have solid entrepreneurial and management skills. What kind of personalities, qualities, and knowledge does a good UX consultant really need and how can young people add to their current skills to enter the UX arena effectively?

As far as facilities go, the UW conference rooms can easily be used as well. Please contact me for assistance.

  4. Thinking of showing the “Powers of Ten” video by Charles and Ray Eames — it’s practically required viewing for designers. Check out the Simpson’s homage to this classic video here on YouTube.

Just wanted to say that I had a great, great time at the UX Chit Chat today. The best thing about the event was the diversity which people brought to the table (literally to the table), from designers to business people to academics.

Would love to see some links related to the discussion on “What it takes to be a UX Advisor/Interaction Designer.”

Please continue to do what you are doing the way you are!

  6. It was very nice to meet everyone last night. I enjoyed the chitchat and hope to see more interactive sessions like this in the future. By the way, UX garage is awesome idea.

“What does it take to be a UX designer” got me thinking. I captured some resource in my post here.

Looking forward to the next event!

Thanks Bob and Navid for organizing.

  7. Thanks for your comments, Majid and Qixing. FYI I’ve just posted a new entry with links to some materials we looked at last night.
